About University
History shapes future leaders’ perspectives.
Founded in 1985, Girne American University (GAU) has undergone remarkable growth over its 33-year journey. Starting with a modest seven students, it has evolved into a thriving university with a student body of over 20,000. From its inception, GAU has nurtured strong affiliations with universities in North America and Europe, setting the stage for its impressive academic journey.
Recognized Excellence
GAU's commitment to academic excellence was promptly recognized when it became one of the first universities in Cyprus to earn accreditation from the Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). Subsequently, it gained recognition from the Higher Education Council of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (YODAK). These national accreditations paved the way for numerous program accreditations and international acknowledgments.
Celebrating Graduation Excellence
As a testament to its dedication, GAU is now celebrating its 33rd graduation ceremony, which took place in June 2018. Over 1,500 graduates marked the occasion by earning their degrees, launching them into advanced studies or promising careers across Europe, the region, and the world.
Global Educational Expansion
In 1995, GAU embarked on a journey into the international higher education sector. Over the years, it has forged educational partnerships in various countries, including India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, the USA, the UK, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, and Moldova. These partnerships encompass student and faculty exchanges, providing students with enriching opportunities to immerse themselves in diverse cultures and unique learning experiences.
